Keeps my cavalier, King Charles dogs, nice and clean.
I have a six year-old cavalier King Charles absolutely loves them you could break them in half with no problem using your hands. They are a little hard for people are over exaggerating how hard I bought these multiple times and my dog looks forward to it. I usually break one and a half and give him a piece every night his teeth are beautiful and my vet said I should never have to worry about a professional cleaning. He said it amazing how clean his teeth are for his age and I only feed him hill science kibble dry dog food as well to promote clean teeth. Hopefully this review is helpful for some people. I highly recommend the product.

My dog hates these
My dog got sick after watching him struggle to eat these unusually hard “healthy dental chews”. He is used to the Purina Dental Chews and they work, these stink, literally. The are so freaking hard, one could drive a nail with it. My 5yr old, 18lb Norfolk Terrier is also a Service Animal, he does not leave my side when we leave the house. On his collar is an ampule with Nitro and Diazepam, I’m 55, a man, and spent my early years in very high stress, high risk work. This involved constant fight or flight, very loud sounds and dynamic situations. Post traumatic stress was a given, but advanced heart disease, osteoarthritis, and blast wave damage was all life altering at 40 having never weighed more then 160lbs at 5’10”. My first service dog saved my life, a black lab. Incredible animals that only want to love and be loved and capable of selfless service. At 15, he was worn out and in pain, I broke the appointment to let him go 5 times. When he started having seizures it was clear, the delays were only for me. I held him a birth, and he was in my arms during his final calm, relieved breaths. I cried like a child, heard for most men, we are taught not to cry, so it is ugly and physically hurts like a dry heave. Part of me died too. The next dog would be 18′, and truly the spirit of a Labrador in a smaller package. Small dogs have teeth problems and I take excellent care of him and consider him family with a human name, Fred. I was on the lookout for a product that would add beneficial gut enzymes and stimulate his gums, and most of all, be a treat. This Smartmouth Dental Chew from The Missing Link is either defective or a mean joke. I will look for previous law suits and reports to the FDA. Regardless, I had success on Google when a puppy food almost killed my lab. I posted a notice and it got 500,000 reads in 6 months. Then overwhelming agreement and Pedigree had to settle with thousands of dog owners as their food was tainted with excessive vit D and heavy metals. This is my 2nd dog food or prebiotic post in 20 years. That should indicate how irritated I am with the absence of Quality Control. If this review gets yanked because it does not stay on the rails, then the FTC will also hear from me regarding the suppliers.

Finally, a healthy dental chew!
So I have waited a few weeks before writing this review to see if this dental chew did what it advertised and not only cleaned my dog’s teeth and freshened her breath, but helped her skin and coat and joint health. Good news, it does!My Golden Retriever loves this dental stick. She was all too eager to help me open the bag, but then again she’s a Golden that loves most all foods (except veggies like carrots that would be a good natural crunchy chew – hence the desire to try these). When I gave her the Smartmouth dental chew, she trotted off and was quite pleased with it. It took her about 6 minutes of gnawing at the chew to finish it (record length of time for her and much better than Greenies and Fresh Kisses!) and I could really see her working it on her teeth.After a few weeks, I can see that her teeth are cleaner. This is a dog that eats pine cones, leaves, etc. so her teeth can get pretty dirty with random things stuck in the grooves and I am always checking in her mouth so I had a good baseline to measure against. I was happy to see whiter teeth and fewer things stuck to her teeth. Her breath is also better – again she eats questionable things so this is a major plus to Smartmouth!What I was surprised to see what that her coat indeed got softer and shinier. We even got a few nice comments from co-workers asking what I was doing to get her coat so soft. She has that course hair on her top line and it smoothed out a bit while her down-like undercoat got much softer. Due to her long crinkly hair, she also gets a daily brushing and it got easier to brush her after about a week and so far it’s still getting even better – shortens the brushing time too -super bonus!She is a young dog so I haven’t seen the joint benefits but since her breed is known for joint issues, I am glad to know this dental chew can help support her joint health, especially since she is so active – I really want to protect those joints as much as I can.Overall, I really like this product. I was tired of the junk ingredients in other dental chews (seriously read those ingredients – half of them don’t seem like things dogs should ingest every day – making a product green in color doesn’t make it healthy!) and this product is not only a much better dental chew, it’s much better for my dog’s overall health – makes me feel much better that I am doing more for her, plus she loves it so win-win.
